Herbert Kaul 1897-1962

Herbert Kaul was born 21 Feb 1897 in Granville, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Fredrick George Kaul and Amanda K. Kuebel.

The town Granville, originally created in 1840 by the territorial legislature, was on the north side of Milwaukee, extending from Range Line/27th street on the east to County Line/124th street on the west and from Town Line/Hampton Avenue on the south to County Line Road on the north. Over the years Granville was annexed as part of Milwaukee, Glendale, River Hills and Brown Deer.

Herbert's family settled in Granville, with grandparents Frederick Kaul Sr. and Barbara Kopp getting married there 2 Aug 1857.

The 1860 Federal Census of Granville lists Friedr, 30, farmer, real estate valued at $800, personal estate valued at $350, born Saxonia; Barbara, 19, born Saxonia, and Anna, 1, born Wisconsin.


The 1870 Federal Census of Granville finds Herbert's father, Frederick Jr., as a 1 year old.

The 1880 Federal Census of Granville - Fred, 50, farmer, born Saxony, Barbara, 40, wife, keeps house, born Bavaria, Margaret, 18, daughter, works as servant, Abolena, daughter, works as servant, Halena, 12, daughter, Fridrich, 10, son, Michal,, 8, son, Barbara, 6, daughter, and George, 4, son - all children born in Wisconsin.


Exact date of Frederick's marriage to Amanda K. Kuebel has not yet been found. Their daughter Addie B. was born May 1893 and son Walter was born 19 Jun 1895, followed by Herbert's birth.

Sadly Herbert experienced the loss of family members very early in life. Grandfather, Frederick Sr. died 13 Feb 1899 and was buried in St. Peters Cemetery in Milwaukee.

Then Herbert's father Fredrick Jr. died 8 Oct 1899 and was buried in West Granville Cemetery. He left his wife Amanda and three children Adelaide 6, Walter 5 and Herbert 3.

On 1 Oct 1901 in Muskego, Waukesha, Wisconsin, Amanda married Charles Kroeplin, son of Fred Kroeplin and Wilhelmine Grosskopf. Her parents are given as August Knebel and Augusta Hoffmann.

Herbert's grandmother, Barbara Kopp Kaul died 19 Nov 1901 and is buried beside her husband Frederick Sr. in St. Peters Cemetery in Milwaukee.

The 1905 Wisconsin State Census finds the family living on a rented farm in Granville. 1910 Federal Census of Granville lists Charles Kroeplin, 43, married once, farmer on general farm, owns farm; Amanda, wife, 40, married twice, 4 children born, 4 children living; Frederich, son, 7; Kaul, Ada, step-daughter, 17; Walter, step-son, 14; Herbert, step-son, 13.



Brother Walter was married 12 Jun 1917 in Milwaukee county to Marcella C. Kass.

Herbert registered for the draft 5 Jun 1918 in Milwaukee. He listed his step-father, Chas. Kroeplin as his employer and his mother, Amanda, as his nearest relative. Herbert is described as being of medium height and weight with blue eyes and dark hair.






1920 Federal Census Granville lists Kroeplin, Charles, 53, farmer on general farm; Amanda, wife, 49; Kaul, Herbert, son, 22; Kroeplin, Frederick, son, 17.



On 5 Oct 1921 Herbert married Agnes Spartz. She was born 5 Apr 1896 in Granville, the daughter of Joseph Spartz and Bertha Batzler.

Herbert, 43, a farmer,  52 weeks worked in 1939, no income from farming, income other sources - yes, in 1935 lived in rural Milwaukee County; Agnes, wife, 44; Janette, daughter, 17; Harold, son, 15; Randall, son, 13; Francis, son, 12; Robert, son, 10; Herbert Jr, son, 6. All born in Wisconsin.




The Milwaukee Sentinel 19 Aug 1949 tells of three men attacking Herbert after he left a tavern.


Mother Amanda died 11 Apr 1959 and is buried at Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee.

Perry Baynton 1877 - 1947

Perry Henry Baynton was born 4 Nov 1877 in East Bay township, Grand Traverse county, Michigan, the son of Thomas Baynton and Lucy Patching.


The 1880 Federal Census - East Bay Township, Grand Traverse County - lists the family as follows:

The 1880 agricultural schedule gives a picture of the farm. Owner is listed as Mrs. Lucy Baynton, 60 acres tilled, 3 1/2 acres meadows, pastures, orchards or vineyards, 50 acres wooded. Value of farm is $1,100; implements $100, livestock $400, cost of buildings and repairs $50, cost of labor $20, estimated vaule of farm productions $600. Acres mown 17, 5 tons hay, 2 horses, 2 milch cows, 11 other cattle, 2 calves dropped, 2 cattle purchased, 2 cattle sold living, 1 died, strayed or stolen. Produced 300 pounds butter, 8 acres corn - 250 bushels, 17 acres wheat - 195 bushels, 10 bushels peas, 3/4 acres potatoes - 100 bushels, 3 acres apples - 5 bushels.



Father Thomas died 14 Jan 1882 in East Bay township, of consumption. Death record states he was born in Canada, aged 46 years, 7 months, 13 days.



Mother Lucy died 8 Jul 1887 - Grand Traverse county. She was buried at Williamsburg Cemetery with husband Thomas.

The Traverse City Record Eagle of 29 Aug 1897 tells of Perry going on a camping trip with friends.



The Traverse City Morning Record 24 Mar 1898 states Perry has a letter at the post office.



1900 Federal Census East Bay township finds Perry, 22, born Michigan, farm laborer, boarding with the family of Peter Courtade, 63, born Ohio, farmer, wife Magdalena, 58, 3 children born, 3 children living, born Germany; Frank, 23, born Michigan, farmer, daughter Minnie M., 21, born Michigan, school teacher, daughter Elisabeth, 17, born Michigan.



Perry was married to Bessie (Elizabeth) Courtade on 10 Sep 1901. Joe Bauer, pastor of St. Francis Catholic church in Traverse City performed the ceremony. Bessie was age 19, the daughter of Peter Courtade and Magdelene Jordi.

Son Louis Edward was born 4 Jun 1907 in East Bay township.


The 1908 plat map of East Bay township shows Perry (P.H Baynton) owning 40 acres in section 21.

Perry registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918 in Grand Traverse county. He gave his birth as 4 Nov 1878, nearest relative is Bessie, his wife. Perry is described as medium height and build with gray eyes and brown hair.

The Traverse City Record Eagle of 12 Jan 1938 tells of daughter Marcella's visit to her parents in East Bay township. The Dunn school was located on West Silver Lake at Secor Road. It is still standing as a private home.



Daughter Mary M., age 23, was married 26 Jan 1939 in Traverse City to David H. Crouch, age 33, son of David Crouch and Lenne M. Lawson. Ceremony was performed by William J. Schueller, pastor.


Son Lewis, age 32, married on 2 Oct 1939 in Hannah to Marie W. Steinebach, age 23, daughter of William Steinebach and Josephine Zenner. Ceremony was performed by Rev. Louis Flohe, Catholic priest.

Son Alfred, age 21, was married 22 Jun 1940 in Traverse City to Virginia Lake, age 17, daughter of Leamon Lake and Rose Aschlimann. Ceremony was performed by W. J. Schueller, pastor.

Son Louis Edward gave his birth as 4 Jun 1907, employed at Grand Traverse Auto Company. Mrs. Marie Wilma Baynton, wife, was the person who would always know his address. He was 5'8" tall, 170 lbs., hazel eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion and had operation scars.




Son Ronald William gave his birth as 9 Nov 1913, not employed, Mr. Perry Baynton, father, was the person who would always know his address. He was 5'9" tall, 146 lbs., blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion and had a hernia.





Son Alfred Perry gave his birth as 13 Nov 1918, employed by W.P.A. Mrs. Virginia Louise Baynton, wife, was the person who would always know his address. He was 5'6" tall, 110 lbs., blue eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion.



WPA was the Works Progress Administration, an employment program created by President Roosevelt in 1935.

Perry registered for the draft on 27 Apr 1942. He gave his birth as 4 Nov 1877, self employed on farm in East Bay township. Marcella Crouch was the person who would always know his address. He was 5'5" tall, 140 lbs., blue eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion.


Daughter Elizabeth was married 4 Sep 1943 to Ferdinand William Schwind in Traverse City. Pastor Wm. J. Schueller performed the ceremony.



Perry died 13 May 1947. His obituary appeared in the Traverse City Record Eagle the same day.



Perry was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Traverse City.
