Frederich Zuchowski

Frederich Zuchowski was born 17 Nov 1855 in Stangenwalde, Westpreussen, Germany, the fourth child of Martin Zuchowski and Katharina Brause.

He married (Dorothy) Julia Compert/Kampert. She was born 16 Mar 1857 in Germany.

They married 5 Apr 1880 in Germany. A son (Charlie?) was born 30 Jan 1881 and died 8 Mar 1881. (Records not yet found to confirm these dates).

Fred and Julia left Hamburg on 16 May 1881, headed for New York.



The ship "State of Alabama" left Glaslow on 21 May 1881 arriving in New York on 6 Jun 1881.  Fred and Julie traveled in steerage along with approximately 600 others.



They couple lived in Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, where their son, Herman F., was born 26 Jan 1882.

Another son, Frederick, was also born in Cleveland, 6 Apr 1884. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church.



The family then moved to Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, where son William G. was born 8 Mar 1887. From there the family moved to Michigan.

Daughter Louise was born 12 Apr 1889 in Midland county, Michigan.

Son Emil Otto was born 29 Jun 1891 in Larkin township, Midland county, Michigan




Son Arthur Albert was born 14 Sep 1893 in Larkin township, Midland county, Michigan

The 1900 Federal Census has the family living in Larkin township, Midland county, Michigan. Note that being able to spell was not necessary to be a census taker.

Fred was born Nov 1855 in Germany, age 44, married for 20 years, to US in 1881, filed for citizenship, a farmer.

Wife Julia was born Mar 1857 in Germany, age 43, 9 children born, 8 children living.

Children are Herman, born Jan 1882 in Ohio, age 18; Fredrick, born Apr 1884 in Ohio, age 16; William, born Mar 1887 in Ellinis, age 13; Lauarta, born Mar 1889 in Michigan, age 11; Amnil, born Jun 1891 in Michigan, age 8; Arthur, born Sep 1893 in Michigan, age 6; Gustaf, born Mar 1896 in Michigan, age 4; Annie, born Nov 1898 in Michigan, age 1.



Youngest child, son John F., was born 16 Mar 1902 in Larkin township, Midland county, Michigan


Son Herman married Viola Van Duseu on 7 Mar 1905 in Midland, Midland county.

With the birth of Herman and Viola's daughter Louise in 1906, Fred and Julia became grandparents. (There would be 13 more grandchildren to follow with the youngest born in 1931.)


Son Frederick married Myra Warner on 3 Dec 1907 in Lansing, Ingham county.



Son Fred died on 9 Mar 1909 in Larkin township.


Son Frederick is buried in Midland City Cemetery.


The 1910 Federal Census of Larkin township, Midland county has Fredrich, 55, married 29 years, to US in 1881, naturalized citizen, farmer on general farm; wife Julie is 53, 10 children born, 8 children living; the children are Louise, 21; Emile, 18; Arthur, 16; Gustave, 14; Annie, 11; and John 7.


Missing from the family are sons Herman and Frederick who are both married. Son William, 23,  is working as a hired man/farm laborer in Blumfield township, Saginaw county.


On 17 Nov 1911 son William married Eleanora Bernecker in Saginaw, Saginaw county.



Daughter Louise was married to Emil Bieberich on 25 Apr 1915 in Auburn, Bay county.

Son Emil enlisted 27 Jun 1918, served as a private in Company B, 40th Machine Gun Battalion, 14th Division from Michigan.

The 14th Division, known as the Wolverine Division, included 40th Machine Gun Battalion, and was organized at Camp Custer 29 Jul 1918. The artillery brigade was organized 10 Aug 1918 and training for overseas service began immediately.




Son Arthur enlisted in the Army on 30 Aug 1918 (unit unknown).

Son Herman registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sep 1918 in Detroit. He is 5 ft 10 1/2 inches tall, blue eyes, brown hair.




Son Emil was discharged from the army on 17 Jan 1919. Son Arthur was discharged 29 Jan 1919.

Daughter Anna marrie Albert H. Ehlerding on 9 Oct 1919 in Midland county.


Sadly daughter Louise died 26 Nov 1919 in Midland county


She was buried in Midland City Cemetery.



In 1920 the Federal Census of Larkin township, Midland county lists Frederich, 64, born Germany, farmer; wife Julia, 63, born Germany, and son John 16, born Michigan.



Oldest granddaughter Louise gives birth to Gloria, the first of Fred and Julia's great-grandchildren on 6 Aug 1925.

Still living in Larkin township the 1930 Federal Census finds a change of birth place. Fredrick, age 74, married at 24, born Poland, farmer; wife Julia, 7, married at 23, born Poland, and son, John 27, born Michigan, farm laborer.

Julia died 23 Nov 1937 of acute cardiac failure. Her age is listed as 80 years, 8 months, 7 days.


She was buried in Midland Cemetery.

The 1940 Federal Census finds Fred and John still in Larkin township. Fred is 84, born Germany and John, 36, born Michigan. They lived in the same house in 1935. No occupations are listed.



Son Herman registered to the WWII draft in Midland on 27 Apr 1942. He is described at 5 ft 10 inches, 158 lbs, ruddy complexion, blue eyes, gray hair.



Son William registered for the WWII draft on 27 Apr 1942 in Grand Traverse county. He is described as 6 ft 2 inches, 160 lbs, light complexion, blue eyes, gray hair, scar on left knee.



Son Emil registered on 27 Apr 1942 in Wayne county. He is described at 6 ft 2 inches, 200 lbs, light complexion, gray eyes, gray hair.


Arthur registered in Wayne county (date not given). He is described as 6 ft, 170 lbs, light complexion, brown eyes, gray hair.


Gustav registered 27 Apr 1942 in Wayne county. He is described as 6 ft, 175 lbs, ruddy complexion, blue eyes, gray hair.



John enlisted in the US Army on 12 Aug 1942.


Frederich died 23 Jun 1946 in Ft. Wayne, Allen county, Indiana.


Fred and Julia are buried together at Midland City Cemetery.
