Stories

The Gehl creamery was built near the original Nick Nenno hotel and store. Ambrose drove to the homes of the area farmers who had milk cows, with a small wagon and horses to pick up the cream and haul it to the creamery where it was made into butter and cheese. If the farmer didn't have a cream separator, Ambrose would use a scoop to take the cream off the milk.

Wisconsin Historical Society, Wisconsin Architecture and History Inventory, Historic Name: Riverside Creamery (also Gehl Condensery), 537 Main Street, Addison, Washington County, Wisconsin, Reference Number 115520.

"The Riverside Creamery is a vernacular gabled frame structure. Built c. 1895, the building has a metal raised seam roof, horizontal plank siding, and rests on a concrete stucco-covered foundation. The creamery evolved over time and has several additions and modifications. The front of the building consists of three sections. The central, side-gabled one-story building is flanked to the west by a taller, two-story side-gabled section, and to the east by a one-story hipped roof addition. The front facade of the central section has a modern bay door. Most windows are original, and consist of four-light casements, two-over-two double-hung sash, and two-light fixed panes. Windows on the east facade are covered with board. Several frame additions and a flat-roofed brick building have been added to the rear of the three-part front building. A white brick smokestack with a polychromatic red brick design is located at the rear.

Located to the west of the creamery is a gambrel roofed barn, built c. 1895. This frame building has a wide sloping roof with asphalt shingles, and has two cross gabled dormers in its eastern roof facade. The barn is sided in vertical plank and has a shed-roofed addition on the street side, with two sliding bay doors that span the width of the building. A square, fixed window is located at the eave.

West of the barn is a non-contributing modern metal trailer. The Riverside Creamery property has been used for manufacturing since the late 1950s."

Instead of saying "all my grandchildren" in his will, Ambrose would make a change each time a grandchild was born.

Frances liked to climb trees so much that Julia would periodically call out the door "Frances get out of that tree" without even looking.
