Pokorny family

Franz Pokorny was born between 1845 and 1852 in Bohemia. He married Anna Sithanek there and together the couple had 10 children. The first five children were born in Blovice, Bohemia.


Blovice is in the Pilsen Region of the Czech Republic on the River Uslava.



Son Frank was born 10 Jan 1872. (From his naturalization record)

Son Jousa (Joseph?) was born about 1874 (From passenger list to US)

Son Louis Frank was born 20 Dec 1876 (From his naturalization record)

Daughter Marie was born 1881 (From passenger list to US)

Son Charles Frank was born 28 Jan 1881 (From his naturalization record, passenger list says he is two years older).

Franz, Anna and the children came to America aboard the SS Furnessia




They arrived in New York on 18 Oct 1881.  Family is listed as Franz, 34; Anna, 33: Franz, 11;, Joufa/Jousa, 7; Julius, 4; Karl, 2 years 7 months; and Marie, 7 months.



When becoming citizens Frank, Louis and Charles all claim to have come to the US in 1882.

Five more children were born to Franz and Anna in Chicago: John Joseph was 11 Dec 1882; Joseph was born 3 Aug 1884; Edward was born 14 Oct 1886; August was born 12 Apr 1889 and Anna was born 28 Jan 1892.

The first child to marry was Frank who married Mary Vecera on 14 May 1898 in Chicago.

The next record found for the family is the 1900 Federal Census. They are living in a multi-family house at 826 S. Ashland Avenue, Chicago, Cook county, Illinois.  Frank, born Apr 1851, age 49, married 29 years, born Bohemia, came to the US in 1881, Naturalized, carpenter; Anna, born Feb 1854, 46, married 29 years, 12 children born, 7 children living, born Bohemia, to US 1881, no occupation; Louis, born Jan 1878, 22, born Bohemia, to US 1881, gilder of picture frames; Charles, born Apr 1880, 20, born Bohemia, to US 1881, painter; Mary, born Mar 1882, 18, born Illinois, clerk at clothing; Joseph, born Jan 1885, 15, born Illinois, cornice maker; Edward, born Feb 1889, 11, born Illinois, school.


Missing from the census are sons Frank (married, census not found), Joufa/Jousa, John, and August and daughter Anna.

Daughter Marie/Mary Ann married Anton Osmera 24 Sep 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois

Son Charles had his son Edward, born 20 Oct 1909, baptized 1 Nov 1909 at St Agnes of Bohemia church.





The 1910 Federal Census has the family living at 2828 Homan Avenue in Chicago. Frank is 63, married 40 years, born Aust. Bohemia, to US 1884, naturalized, carpenter at building; Anna, 58, married 40 years, 11 children born, 7 children living, born Aust. Bohemia, to US 1884; Joseph, son, 21, born Illinois, laborer at spring factory; Edward, son, 19, born Illinois, laborer at spring factory; Josephine, daughter-in-law, 23, married 5 years, 2 children born, 2 children living; Charles, son, 27, married 5 years, born Aust. Bohemia, to US 1884, striper at shop; Charles, grandson, 4, born Illinois; Edward, grandson, 6 months, born Illinois.


The 1910 Chicago City Directory lists Chas. painter, Edw, laborer, and Frank, carpenter, as living at 2828 S. Herman Ave.



The 1910 Federal Census finds several of Franz and Anna's children living in Grant township, Grand Traverse, Michigan

Anton, Osmera, 33, married once - 7 years, born Aust-Bohemia, to US 1896, NA, carpenter of houses and barns; wife Mary, 26, 2 children born, 2 children living, born Aust-Bohemia, to US 1885; daughters May, 3 and Lillie, 9/12 - both born in Illinois; Pokorny, Louis, brother-in-law, 33, born Aust-Bohemia to US 1888 NA, laborer in factory.

Pokorny, Frank, 37, married once - 11 years, born Aust-Bohemia, to US 1888, NA, laborer in factory; wife Mary, 28, 6 children born, 5 living, born Aust-Bohemia; son Eddie, 11, born Illinois; daughters Rose, 6, Helen, 5 and Emma, 2 - all born Illinois, and son Willie 1/12, born Michigan.


Son Louis married Minnie Zinke 30 Nov 1914 in Chicago

Son Eddie married Agnes Mazouch 4 Nov 1914 in Chicago

Son Joseph married Emily Ludwik 14 Aug 1915 in Chicago

No death record of Franz and Anna have been found, nor are they listed in the 1920 Federal Census. There is a listing for Anna (wid Frank) living at 2612 S. Kedzie Ave. in the 1923 Chicago city directory, but no proof it is the correct Anna.

FRANK

Frank filed a declaration of intention on 13 Jul 1918




1920 Federal Census has Mary, 41, married, born Bohemia, owns farm, farmer at general farm; son Edward, 23, born Illinois, farm laborer at home farm, Emma, 12, born Illinois and William, 9, born Michigan. [Daughters Rose and Helen are in Chicago with their uncle Joseph. Frank is away from family, but his 1920 census entry has not been found.]


Frank's Petition for Naturalization is dated 30 Apr 1921


Frank took the Oath of Citizenship on 28 Dec 1921 in Chicago.


Frank died 23 Mar 1924 in Chicago, and is buried 25 Mar 1924 in Bohemian National cemetery. His address on his death record is 2230 S. Spaulding, Chicago.



The 1930 Federal Census has Mary and three of her children living at 2223 Hamlin in Chicago, paying rent of $48 per month. Mary is 52, widowed, first married at 20, born in Czechoslovakia; son Edward, 31, born Illinois, laborer at a factory; daughter Emma, 22, born Illinois, stenographer at an office; son William, 21, born Illinois, laborer at a factory.


1940 Federal Census finds Mary, 60, widowed, born Czechoslovakia, living at 2632 S. Spaulding in the home of daughter Helen, 33, born Illinois, son-in-law John Svec, 38, born Illinois, researcher at the daily paper and granddaughter Marie, 9, born Illinois.


Mary died in 1957 and is buried with her husband in Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago.


LOUIS

Son Louis registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918. He states he was born 20 Dec 1876 and is a citizen by his father's naturalization before Louis was an adult. He lives at 449 N. Clark in Chicago, an elevator operator at W.D. Boyce Co. of 500 Dearborn St., Louis is 5'9", medium build, blue eyes and dark hair. Nearest relative is Mrs. Josephine Schmidt of 3039 St. Louis Ave.




On 2 Jan 1919 son Louis filed a declaration of intention. He states he is an elevator operator, 5 feet 9 inches tall, 153 lbs. He has a dark complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes and a scar on his nose. He was born in Blovice, Austria on 20 Dec 1876 and is married to Minnie.




MARY

The 1920 Federal Census finds the family has left Michigan and is now living in Butler county, Nebraska. Anton is 44, came to the US in 1893, born in Moravia, a carpenter of homes; Mary is 30, came to US in 1898, born in Moravia; children are Mary, 15, born in Illinois, Lilly, 11, born in Michigan; and Ella, 6, born in Michigan.


In 1930 the Federal Census has the family still in Butler county, Nebraska. Anton is 56, born Czechoslovakia, laborer; Mary A., 48, born Czechoslovakia; Mary, 23, born Nebraska; Lillian, 21, born Nebraska; and Alice, 16, born Nebraska.

By the 1940 Federal Census the family is living at 6337 2nd Street in Omaha, Nebraska. Anton is 65, born Bohemia and Mary is 62, born Bohemia. They state that in 1935 they were living in rural Butler county.


Mary died 16 Oct 1961. Her obituary appeared in the Omaha Evening World Herald.


Anton died 12 Oct 1962. His obituary was printed in the Omaha Evening World Herald on 14 Oct.


They are buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska.




CHARLES

Son Charles filed a declaration of intention on 13 Jul 1918. He is a painter, dark complexion, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 152 lbs, black hair and brown eyes. He states he was born in Blovice on 28 Jan 1881, now living at 5200 S. Lincoln in Chicago with wife Toreline.



1920 Federal Census has Charles, 38, born Bohemia, to US 1880, painter at Harvester Paint Shop, living at 5159 S. Albany. Wife Josephine is 33, born Chicago; sons Charles, 14, Edward, 10 and George 1 1/12 also born in Chicago.



On 30 Apr 1921 Charles filed a petition for naturalization. He is living at 5159 S. Albany Ave. with wife Josephine, born 9 Oct 1886 in Chicago, and children Charles, born 7 Nov 1905, Edward born 20 Oct 1909 and George born 12 Dec 1918 - all born in Chicago.




Charles took the Oath of Allegiance on 28 Dec 1921.

Charles is listed in the 1923 Chicago city directory as a laborer living at 5213 S. Albany.

The 1930 Federal Census finds the family living at 5937 Washtenaw. Charles, 47, married at 23, born Czechoslovakia, laborer at Nickerl (?) Plating company; wife Josephine, 43, married at 18, born Illinois; sons: Charles, 24, machinist at factory; Edward, 20, spraying at factory; George, 11; and Robert, 5, are all born Illinois.

The 1940 Federal Census finds Charles a homeowner, at 4616 Sacramento Avenue, home valued at $1,750. Charles is 57, born Bohemia, a laborer at a plating company; Josephine is 53, born Illinois; son Edward, 30, born Illinois, laborer at a furniture company; son George, 21, born Illinois, laborer at retail store; son Robert, 15, born Illinois.  The family lived at the same place in 1935. Living at the same address is son Charles, who pays rent of $25 per month, is 34, born Illinois, a machinist at a food company; along with his wife, Emilie, 29, born Illinois, and son Charles, 5, born Illinois.




Charles was living at 4616 S. Sacramento Avenue when he registered for the draft for WWII. He gives his middle name as Frank, birth as 16 Jan 1882, and employer as Great Lakes Plating Company.


Charles is mentioned as living in Joseph's obit in 1965 but not in Edward's obit of 1970.

JOSEPH

On 12 Sep 1918, Joseph registered for the draft. He was living at 2441 S. Springfield. States he was born 3 Aug 1784 [1884], doing press work at Addressograph Company of 911 S. Van Buren. Nearest relative is wife Emily. Joseph is medium height and build with blue eyes and dark brown hair.

The 1920 Federal Census finds Joseph living in a three family home at 2448 S. Springfield. He is 35, born Illinois, a machinist at addressograph mfg.; wife Emily is 25, born Illinois, pricer at mail order house; with them are nieces Rose, 17, born Illinois, re-checker at mail order house and Helen, 15, born Illinois, sorter at mail order house. Rose and Helen are the daughter of Joseph's oldest brother Frank.


Joseph is listed in the 1923 Chicago city directory as a machinist, living at 2448 S. Springfield Avenue.

In the 1930 Federal Census, Joseph, 40, married at 26, born Illinois, machinist at electrical company; and wife Emily, 32, married at 18, born Illinois; live at 3523 Wisconsin Avenue, Berwyn, Illinois.



Still are 3523 Wisconsin Avenue in Berwyn in the 1940 Federal Census, Joseph is now listed as owner, with the home valued at $6,500. He is 55, born Illinois, a machinist at electrical manufacturer. Wife Emily is 46, born Illinois.



Joseph's WWII draft registration states he had no middle name. His home address of 3523 S. Wisconsin Avenue is crossed out and 3530 Home Avenue is written over, both in Berwyn. He was born 3 Aug 1884 in Chicago and is working at Hotpoint General Electric Company at 19th and 52nd Streets in Cicero, Illinois.

EDWARD

Edward was living at 3109 W. 25th when he registered for the draft on 5 Jun 1917.  He gave his birth as 14 Oct 1886 in Chicago, and worked as a machinist for Kinney Rome in Chicago. Married with one child, he is of medium build and height with light blue eyes and light brown hair.





The 1920 Federal Census has Edward, 30, born Illinois, machinist - punch press; wife Agnes, 22, born Illinois; daughter Blanche, 3, born Illinois. The family is living at 2623 S. Troy in Chicago.


By the 1930 Federal Census Edward is a homeowner at 5750 Talman, valued at $6,300. He is 38, born Illinois, a machine operator - upholstering; wife Agnes is 33, born Illinois; daughter Blanche, 14, born Illinois; and son Edward, 6/12, born Illinois.


Edward died 10 May 1970. His obituary, printed in the Chicago Tribune of 12 May 1970, states he was buried in Evergreen Park.
