Karl Funseth 1862-1920

Karl Funseth was born 1 May 1862 in Grelsgard, Stroms, Jamtland, Sweden, the second child of Olov Funseth and Magdalena Karlsdotter. (A sister Brita Kajsa was born 16 Oct 1860).


Grelsgard is a small village or group of houses just outside the small town of Stromsund in Jamtland County.

Karl was married to Kristina Margareta Risberg, daughter of Nils Erik Risberg and Brita Kristina Persdotter on 24 Jun 1886 in Vasternorrland, Stroms, Jamtlands, Sweden.



Karl's youngest sister Hilma Maria was born 26 May 1887.

The Sweden Household Examination Book for Strom, Jamtland gives a look at the family.



Karl and Kristina's first child, Olav, was born and died on 9 Dec 1886 in Stroms, Jamtlands, Sweden. Sadly the second child, Magdalena Kristina, who was born on 18 Jan 1888, died 19 Jan 1888, also in Stroms.




Karl, his brothers Johan Erik and Olof Peter, wife Kristina, her father Nils Risberg and three of her brothers came to America in 1888. Karl and Kristina settled in Jadis township, Kittson county, Minnesota. Johan and Olof settled in Chehalis, Washington.



Son Ole Peter was born 4 Aug 1889 in Jadis, Kittson, Minnesota

Karl filed a declaration of intent for naturalization on 17 Jan 1890 in Kittson county, vol A page 391.



The "Befolkning 1890" CD gives a view of the family left in Sweden.

Naturalization Final Papers for Karl are dated 19 May 1897, Roseau county, vol. A page 272.



Son John Erik was born 14 Aug 1898 in Jadis, Roseau, Minnesota and baptized on 28 Aug 1898 at the Lutheran Church in Roseau (record book from Grand Forks, North Dakota).



Karl's homestead certificate is dated 11 Jun 1900.

Brothers Johan and Olof left Washington and returned to Sweden.

Karl's brother John Erick returned to America in 1905 along with his wife and three children, brother Edvard/Edward and family. After staying in Minnesota for about a year, they moved to Spokane, Washington.

Kristina's father, Nils Risberg, died 13 Mar 1906


Karl's brother John died 18 Nov 1906 in Spokane, Washington and Edward died soon after, both passing from typhoid fever.

Funseth, Carl, 47, married 24 years, to US 1888, naturalized, farmer on general farm; Christian, 50, 8 children born, 6 children living, only speaks Swedish; Olaf, 20, no occupation given; Anna, 18, teacher at public school; Axel, 17; Edla, 14; John, 12; Martin, 10.


The city of Roseau, the county seat, is in sections 13 and 24 of Jardis township. The postcard below shows a view of the city in 1910.



Sister Hilma left Sweden, arriving in New York, New York on 21 Nov 1910. She traveled to Minnesota and stayed with Karl's family temporarily.

On 30 Nov 1911 daughter Anna Marie married Lars Fritoff Wickstrom.

In 1912 son Olaf/Ole Peter married Millie R. Olofson.

On 8 Jul 1912 Karl and Kristina became grandparents with the birth of Anna's son Adolp Wickstrom.

1913 Plat map of Jadis shows Karl owning the NW 1/4 of section 15, a total of 160 acres. Square on section show location of house.

Sister Hilma married Alexander Neil Hamilton on 9 Sep 1914 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Karl's father, Olov, died 11 Nov 1915 in Jamtlands, Sweden. He was born 19 May 1833 in Flesberg, Buskeud, Norway.

Daughter Edna married John Weaver on 1 Jun 1917 in Roseau county.

Three of Karl's sons registered for the WWI draft. On 5 Jun 1917 Ole Peter registered, stating he is married with three children. He lists his occupation as Section Foreman for the Great Northern Railroad.



On 27 Jun 1918 Axel Carl registered in Saskatchewan, Canada.



And on 6 Sep 1918 John Erick registered. No records have been found showing John or his brothers served in the military.




1920 Federal Census - Jadia, Roseau county
Funseth, Carl, 57, farmer at general farm; wife Christin, 60; son John, 21, farmer at home farm; son Martin, 19, no occupation given.


Son John married Olga Hanson on 23 Aug 1920 in Roseau county.

Karl died 16 Sep 1920 in Roseau county, state file # 013418, record #311295.

His will written 15 Sep 1920 was probated 25 Oct 1920.




Son Martin E. married Agnes Gulbault 3 Sep 1922 in Roseau county.

Kristina died 11 Jun 1938 in Spruce, Roseau county, state file #013452, record #785326.

She is buried beside Karl at Spruce Cemetery in Roseau.
