John Wolf

John Wolf was born 24 Aug 1824 in Kleinbullesheim, Euskirchen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, the son of Martin Wolf and Anna Margaret Heubach.


He came to the United States aboard the ship Brutus with his father, mother, and his older siblings, Henry, Anton and Gertrud. They arrived in New York on 4 Jul 1845.




On 6 Nov 1853 at SS Peter and Paul church in Nenno, John married Franceska Pfeiffenberger.


Franceska was born 20 Oct 1831 in Waldrohrbach, Rheinland, Prussia to John Philip Pfeiffenberger and Katharina Franceska Gotz.

John and Franceska became the parents of 12 children. The first, Katherina, was born on 12 Oct 1854 in Addison. Her baptism has not been found.

On 2 May 1856 John became a naturalized citizen.


The next child was John Philip, born 22 Aug 1856 and baptized 14 Sep recorded at SS Peter and Paul church, vol 1 page 5.


Adam was born 12 Dec 1858 and baptized 16 Jan 1859, recorded at SS Peter and Paul church, vol 1 page 19.

The 1860 Federal Census of Addison shows John Wolf, 35, farmer, value of real estate $2,000, personal estate $350, born Prussia; Frances, 29, born Bavaria; John P., 3, Catharine, 5 and Adam, 1, all born Wisconsin. Next family is Frances' parents John P. and Catharine Pfeiffenberger.


Jacob was born 3 May 1861 and baptized 20 May, recorded at SS Peter and Paul church, vol 1 page 19.


Phillip was born 3 Sep 1863 and baptized on the 11th, recorded at SS Peter and Paul church, vol l page 42.

Anna was born 30 Dec 1865 in Addison. Her baptism has not been found.

Martin was born 7 Dec 1867 and baptized on the 21st, recorded at SS Peter and Paul church, vol 2 page 20.

Amalia used the birthdate 18 Dec 1869, yet she was baptized as Anna Maria on 20 Nov 1869, recorded at SS Peter and Paul church, vol 2 page 25.


The 1870 Federal Census of Addison lists John, 45, farmer, born Prussia, Franciska, 39, keeping house, born Bavaria, Catharina, 16, John, 14, Adam, 12, Jacob, 9, Philip, 7, Anna, 5, Martin, 3 and Amalia, 8/12. Next door is John's brother Anton and his family.



Julia was born 16 Oct 1871 and baptized on the 20th, recorded at SS Peter and Paul church, vol 2 page 29.


John Martin was born 8 Nov 1873, but not baptized until 11 Jan 1876, recorded at SS Peter and Paul church, vol 1 page 51.


Daughter Katherina married on 12 Sep 1876 to John Martin Hefter. The couple raised 10 children. Their first child, John Hefter Jr., was born 6 May 1877. He was the first of over 80 grandchildren of John and Franceska Wolf.

John's youngest child, Paul John was born 2 Jun 1878 and baptized at SS Peter and Paul church, as recorded in vol 2 page 57.


The 1880 Federal Census, Addison township has John, age 56, farmer; Frances, 49, keeping house; Adam, 21, working on farm; Jacob, 19, carpenter; Philip, 17, working on farm; Anna, 15; Amelie, 11; Julie, 7; Martin, 5; Paul, 2.


Son John married 18 Apr 1882 to Sophia Maria Hartmann (vol. 3 page 26). They had 5 children together.



Son Jacob married 6 Oct 1885 to Barbara Hefter.

Son Adam was married 8 Feb 1887 to Mathilda Decker. The couple raised 5 children.

Daughter Anna was married 26 May 1887 to Xavier Moser. They had 4 children.

Daughter Amalia was married 19 May 1890 to Francis Hefter. This couple raised 14 children.

Son Philip married first 24 Nov 1891 to Barbara Sherman. This couple had 5 children. After Barbara's death Philip married 19 Jun 1909 to Anna Sherman and had two more children.

Daughter Julia married 18 Oct 1892 to Ambrose Zingsheim. They were parents of 13 children.

Son John Martin married Jeanette Hundertmark in 1900. They had 6 children.

1900 Federal Census of Addison lists: John, 75, marriedd 47 years, farmer; Franciska, 67, 12 children born, 10 children living; Martin, son, 26, married 2 years, farm laborer; Paul, son, 21, farm laborer; Jeanette, daughter-in-law, 22, married 2 years, 2 children born, 2 children living; Maria, granddaughter, 1; Wendelein, granddaughter, 2/12 (child is actually named Olive)


The names of only 11 children of John and Franceska are known, with Martin born in 1867 dying young.

Son Paul married 22 Sep 1903 in West Bend to Anna Gertrude Wenninger. This couple had 7 children.

In the 1905 Wisconsin state census Franciska is widowed, age 73, living with son Martin, 31, his wife Genetta, 28, and their children Mary, 6, Oliva, 4, Theodore, 2 and Annie, 1.  Neighbors include son Paul, his wife and child, son Jacob, his wife and children, and widowed daughter Katharine Hefter and her children.

Franceska Pfeiffenberger Wolf holding granddaughter, Clara Wolf. Clara was born in 1905, just months prior to Franceska's death.



John died 19 Jan 1903 in Addison. His death is recorded at SS Peter and Paul Church.




Franceska died 4 Sep 1905 in Addison. Her death is also recorded at SS Peter and Paul Church.


They are buried together at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery.
