Charles Basch

Charles Basch was born 3 Oct 1871 in Good Harbor, Leelanau, Michigan, the first known child of John Basch and Wilhelmina Stark/Starky/Starnky.

Siblings are John, born 3 Oct 1872, Peter born 2 May 1876 and August born 5 Aug 1879.

The 1880 Federal Census for Cleveland Township, Leelanau, Michigan lists: Basch, John, 41, farmer, born Hanover; Minnie, 30, born Prussia; Charles, 9, at school, born Michigan; John, 8, at school, born Michigan; Peter, 4, born Michigan; August 11/12, born Michigan.


The front page of the  22 Aug 1895 issue of the Leelanau Enterprise lists marriage licenses issued. Included are Charles Basch and Christina Hanson.


On 24 Aug 1895 Charles married Christina Hansen at the home of her parents.

Page 34, Leelanau county marriage records states they were married by John J. Maakstead, minister of the gospel. Witnesses were Claus Basch and Peter Claus, both of Good Harbor. Charley was 24, born Michigan, resided in Leelanau county, a farmer, son of John Basch and Minnie Stark. Christina was 18, born Michigan, resided in Leelanau county, a farmer's daughter, daughter of Jacob Hanson and unknown.

Page 47 of the Michigan marriage records gives nearly identical information.


The records of the First Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay, page 146 #84 gives Christina's mother as unknown (Dorthea) and her birth as Michigan (Denmark). Mary Fitcheu and Julia Peterson are also listed as witnesses.


The 29 Aug 1895 issue of the Leelanau Enterprise describes the happy occasion.


Daughter Blanche was born 13 Mar 1896 in Centerville Township, page 39 from Michigan State birth records.




Blanche's birth is also recorded on page 43 volume 3 of the Leelanau county birth records.




From the Michigan State Gazeteer and Business Directory of 1897: "Good Harbor. Population, 75. On Lake Michiganin Leelanau county, Centervile township, 7 miles south of Leland, the judicial seat, and 7 from Cedar, the nearest banking and shipping point. Has rural delivery from Maple City."

Son Harvie was born 26 Dec 1897. No birth record has been found. Sadly he died 13 Mar 1899 in Centerville township and is buried in Good Harbor.



Son Charles L. was born 10 Dec 1899 in Centerville township, from the Michigan State births.



Charles' birth is also recorded on page 93, volume 3 of the Leelanau county birth records.




1900 Federal Census of Centerville Township, Leelanau county, taken 27 Jun. Basch, Charles, born Oct 1871, 28, married 4 years, born Michigan, parents born Germany, occupation is Teamster, rents a house; Christina, wife, born May 1877, 23, married 4 years, 3 children born, 2 children living, born Denmark, parents born Denmark, to US 1883; Blanche, daughter, born Mar 1897, 3, born Michigan; Charles, son, born [month written over ] 1899 , 7/12, born Michigan.



Son Ernest H. was born 19 Jan 1901. No birth record has been found.

The records of Good Harbor school spring term 6 May 1901 to Jul 1901 list Blanche Bash, age 5, first grade. Teacher was Irene Morton - her notes at the end of the term say Blanche has "had worki in Werner's primer and Harper's 1st reader. There has been only one book of each kind for the entire class and have not made the advancement they should."

Daughter Maude was born 14 Jul 1903. No birth record has been found.

Charles' father, John, died 15 Jul 1904 in Cleveland township.


Son Bernard Oswald was born 4 Apr 1906, recorded on page 189, volume 3, Leelanau county births.



The Good Harbor school records for 1906-1907 list Ernest Basch, 6 and Charles Basch, 7 as being in first grade. Teacher was Clara Barth.


Son Arthur was born prematurely on 23 Oct 1908 in Centerville, Leelanau county. His birth was recorded on page 226 volume 3, Leelanau county births. 



Unfortunately Arthur only lived 10 minutes. He is buried in Good Harbor / Swedish Mission cemetery.



The 1910 Federal Census for Centerville township was taken 18 and 19 of April. Charles, 38, married 14 years, born Michigan, farmer at a general farm, owns mortgaged farm. Wife Christina, 32, married 14 years, 7 children born, 5 children living, born Denmark, to US in 1882; daughter Blanche, 14; son Charles, 10; son Ernist, 9; daughter Maud, 6; son Bernard, 4. All children born Michigan.


On 31 Jul 1911 an unnamed son was stillborn. His birth is recorded in the Leelanau county births, page 294, volume 3.





Daughter Blanche, 18, born Michigan, resided Cleveland Township, married Robert E. W. Kurtzhals on 22 Jul 1914 in Good Harbor. License date 6 Jul 1914. Robert, 26, born Michigan, resided Bodus, a day laborer, son of August Kurtzhals and Charlotte Peterson. The ceremony was performed by T.C. Haessler, Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Witnesses were Frieda Glassmer of Traverse City and Howard Olson of Maple City. 



Son Harris Ervin was born 13 Jun 1915 in Good Harbor.

Son Charley registers for the WWI draft 12 Sep 1918. He says he was born 10 Dec 1900 [yet he was alive when the Federal Census was taken on 27 Jun 1900]. He is a farmer, living in Maple City. Charley is of medium height and weight, with brown eyes and hair.



Son Willard L. was born 18 Aug 1919 in Good Harbor.

The 1920 Federal Census of Cleveland township was taken 22-24th January. Charles, 48, owns mortgaged, farmer on general farm; Christina E., 42, born Denmark, to US 1882; Charles L., 20, farm laborer on home farm; Ernest H., 18, farm laborer on home farm; Maude J., daughter, 16; Bernard O., son, 13; Harrie I., son, 4 years 6 months; Willard L., son, 1 year 4 months. Listed next are son-in-law Robert W. Kurtzal, 31, rents, farmer at general farm; his wife [Charles' daughter] Blanch E., 23; and their son Elder C., 4 years 6 months. For some unknown reason the census taker put the middle initials before each first name.


On 6 Jan 1922, son Ernest H., 20, born Michigan, resided R.1, Maple City, a farm laborer, married Ellen A. Barrett, 19, born Michigan, resided Traverse City, daughter of Valentine Barrett and Ida Olson. The ceremony was performed by T.C. Haessler, Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Witnesses were Maude Basch and Howard Olson, both of Maple City. 


Son Charles L., 22, laborer, born Leelanau county, resided Traverse City, married 6 Mar 1922 in Traverse City to Clara Happy, 17, born and resided in Traverse City, daughter of Emery Happy and Lottie Enquist. The ceremony was performed by Demas Cochlin, pastor of the First Congregational Church. Witnesses were Maude Basch of Cedar and Andrew L. Barrett of Traverse City.


Daughter Maude Minnie, 18, born Good Harbor, resided in Traverse City was married to Andrew Leo Barrett, 21, born Manistee, resided Traverse City, an ex-soldier, son of Willima Barrett and Ida Olson, on 13 Mar 1922. The ceremony was performed by Demas Cochlin, pastor of the First Congregational Church. Witnesses were Mrs. Chas. Basch and Mr. Charlie Basch of Traverse City.



Daughter Maude Barrett, 19, born Michigan, resided R. 1, Maple City, married Milford Henry Mackey, 24, born Michigan, resided Buckley, farm laborer, son of Frank Mackey and Alice Hopkins. on 28 Mar 1923 in Leland. The ceremony was performed by William Nelson, Justice of the Peace. Witnesses were Emma Williamson of Traverse City, Charles Basch of Maple City and Blanche Kurtzhals of Maple City. It was Maude's second marriage.



The Leelanau Enterprise of 29 Mar 1923 mentions the marriage.



Son Charles, Jr., 23, born Michigan, resided Maple City, R.1, farmer, married once before married 28 Jul 1923 in Leland to Lou Emma Williamson, 20, b. West Virginia, resided Traverse City, waitress, daughter of James Williamson and Samantha Dawson. Ceremony performed by W. C. Nelson, Justice of the Peace. Witnesses were Blanch Kurtzhals and Anthony Wozniak, both of Maple City.


Son Bernard married 21 Sep 1925 in Traverse City to Nellie Cook. They are listed on line 1850 with no other information.



The Traverse City Record Eagle of 19 Aug 1926 tells of Charles Basch and his still. Unknown at this time if it is Charles Sr. or Charles Jr.



Daughter Blanch Kurtzhal, 30, born Michigan, resided Centerville township, married once before,  married 11 Sep 1926 in Traverse City to Charles Ribble, 50, born Michigan, resides Leland, mason, son of Charles Ribble and Mary Drow. The ceremony was performed by William W. Smith, Justice of the Peace. Witnesses were Miss Emma Basch of Maple City and Susan E. Smith of Traverse City.




The Leelanau Enterprise, 3 Feb 1927, tells of an explosion at Charles and Christina's home.



The 17 Feb 1927 issue of the Leelanau Enterprise tells the injured family members are much improved.



Benzie Banner of 17 Feb 1927 runs the story.


From the 24 Feb 1927 issue of the Leelanau Enterprise is learned that grandson Robert will not loss his sight and that a new home will be built.



The 17 Mar 1927 issue of the Leelanau Enterprise tells "Charles Basch Sr. is building a one story house in place of the one wrecked by an acetylene gas explosion in January." 


The Leelanau Enterprise of 28 Apr 1927 says "Charles Basch, Sr. has moved into his new house, built to replace the one wrecked by an explosion in January."



Sons Harris and Willard are attending the Shetland School. The 12 May 1927 issue of the Leelanau Enterprise tells that neither boy was tardy during the past month.

The 2 Jun 1927 issue of the Leelanau Enterprise lists Willard among those not tardy. Since the boys are not listed among the not absent or the non-whisperers can it be assumed they were/did?


Charles Ribble, husband of daughter Blanche, died 26 Aug 1928 in Traverse City.


On 20 Dec 1928 Charles' mother, Wilhemina, died in Centerville.


Daughter Blanche married 26 Nov 1929 in Traverse City to Peter Gellness. Ceremony was performed by D. B. Moore, Pastor of First Christian Church. Witnesses were Christina and Charles Basch of Maple City. Marriage License if from Muskegon county.


Charles died 17 Jan 1930 in Cleveland township, and is buried in Good Harbor.

The 1930 Federal Census of Cleveland Township finds Christine, 52, widowed, born in Denmark, to US in 1882, with sons Charles, 30, married at 24, born Michigan, truck driver; Harris O., 14, born Michgan, and Willard L., 11, born Michigan.


The 1935 city directory of Traverse City has Christine, widow of Chas, working as a kitchen helper. She is living in the rear of 202 W. 15th Street.


Son Harris married 4 Apr 1936 in Muskegon to Jean Van Vleet

Son Willard married 24 Sep 1938 in Traverse City to Ophilia Kelderhouse.

The 1940 Federal Census for Christina has not been found.

In 1947 Christina married John Nelson in Grand Traverse county.

Christina died 27 Sep 1959 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse county.
