Anna Barbara Zingsheim 1861-1932

Anna Barbara was born 25 Jan 1861 in Addison, Washington, Wisconsin, the eight child of Wilhelm Zingsheim and Magdalena Limbach. She was baptized at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.




Not a lot is know about Anna Barbara. Unlike her siblings who mostly stayed in Washington county and had numerous children and grandchildren, she married, moved to South Dakota and had 7 children and only 4 grandchildren.

On 4 Feb 1882 in Washington county, Wisconsin, Barbara married Nicholas K. Pirsch. The name later becomes Pierce.

The couple moved to Kimball, Brule county, South Dakota. Kimball was organized as a village in spring 1883. It was previously known as Stake 48.



Their first child John P. was born on 2 Mar 1883.

Son Nicholas M. was born 6 Jul 1885.

Daughter Katherine D. was born 20 Sep 1888.

Son William Matthew was born 4 Apr 1890.

Barbara's father, Wilhelm Zingsheim, died 11 Aug 1890 in Addison, Washington, Wisconsin. It is unknown how she learned of her loss or when.

Brule county naturalization shows Nicholas filed 29 Aug 1891.



On 28 Nov 1892 Nicholas purchased 160 acres - the SE 1/4 of section 3 in T101N, R68W.



Daughter Margaret was born 18 May 1893.

The 1895 State census of Kimball, Brule, South Dakota shows the family as Nick Pierce, 40; Barbara, 30; John, 12; Nick, 10; Kate, 6; William, 5; and Maggie, 2.



Kimball Graphic 6 Mar 1897 - Nick is elected road supervisor.



Back in Addison, Washington, Wisconsin, Barbara's mother, Magdalena Limbach Zingsheim, died 30 Aug 1898.

Kimball Graphic 7 Oct 1898 tells of daughter Margaret being injured.



The Kimball Graphic 8 Apr 1899 tells of Nick buying more land.



Son Mathias J. was born 10 Apr 1899.

Son Peter Joseph was born 8 Jan 1900.

The 1900 Federal Census of Kimball, Brule, South Dakota has Nicholas Pierce, 48, married for 18 years, to US in 1863, naturalized citizen, farmer, owns free farm; Barbara, 38, 7 children born, 7 children living; John P., 17; Nicholas L., 14; Katy, 11; Willie, 10; Margaret, 7; Matthias J., 2; and Peter J., 5 months.

The 1910 Federal Census of Kimball, Brule, South Dakota describes the family as Nicholas Pierce, 58, married 28 years, farmer on general farmer, owns free farm; wife Barbara, 49, 7 children born, 7 children living; son John, 27, farm helper on home farm; son Nick, 24, farm helper on home farm; daughter Kate, 21, farm helper on home farm; son Bill, 20, farm helper on home farm; daughter Margerate, 16; son Mat, 12; son Peter, 10.


On 10 Jan 1916 daughter Katherine married Sheridan Jones.


With the birth of Katherine's daughter Margaret on 5 Apr 1917 Barbara and Nicholas became grandparents. Katherine had three additional children.

Son-in-law Sheridan Jones registered for the draft on 5 Jun 1917 in Brule county. He is a farmer, working for C. D. Brant, and described as medium height, slender, blue eyes, light brown hair.



Sons John, Nick, William and Peter registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918 in Brule county.

John gives his birth as 2 Mar 1882, farmer working for his father, medium height and build, blue eyes an black hair.



Nick gives his birth as 6 Jul 1884, farmer working for his father, medium height and build, blue eyes and brown hair.



William gives his birth as 4 Apr 1890, a farmer, working for himself, medium height and build, blue eyes and light brown hair.




Peter gives his birth as 8 Jan 1900, a farmer, working for his father, tall, slender, gray eyes, brown hair.




The 1920 Federal Census of Kimball, Brule, South Dakota, the family is givens as Nick, 67, farmer on farm; Barbara, 59, farmer on farm; John, 37, farmer on farm; Nick, 35, farmer on farm; Kathryn, 33, no occupation given; William, 29, farmer on farm; Maggie, 27, farmer on farm; Mathew,21 helper on farmer; Peter, 20, helper on farmer. Why is Kathryn listed with her parents, when she is also listed with her husband and daughter on the same page?


From the Madison Daily Leader of 27 Oct 1921 we learn that Nick Pierce has over 20,000 bushels of corn husked and stored.




Nicholas  died 1 Feb 1928 in Brule, South Dakota.

He is buried at St. Margaret's Cemetery in Kimball, Brule, South Dakota.





After Nicholas' death the Aberdeen Daily News of 30 Sep 1928 tells of Nick Jr.'s purchased of an additional 160 acres.



The 1930 Federal Census of Kimball, Brule, South Dakota lists Barbara as widowed, age 70, married at age 22; John, 47, farmer on general farm; Nick, 45, farmer on general farm; William, 40, farmer on general farm; Margaret, 37, no occupation given; Peter, 29 farmer on general farm; and Mathew, 30, farmer on general farm.



Daughter Katherine Jones died 23 Sep 1931

She is buried at St. Margaret's Cemetery in Kimball, Brule, South Dakota.




Barbara died 23 Aug 1932 in Kimball, Brule, South Dakota.



She is buried at St. Margaret's Cemetery in Kimball, Brule, South Dakota.



Children John, Nicholas, William, Margaret, Matthias and Peter never married. Of daughter Katherine's children only her daughter Margaret married (to Harry Konechne) and had children.
