Peter Plucker

Peter Phiilip Plucker was born in Cattaraugus county, New York in 1824. The son of John Plucker and Catherine, he was the seventh of their nine children.

Peter's father, John Plucker, died 22 Oct 1844 in China, Wyoming county, New York, which is the next county north of Freedom, Cattaraugus county.




Peter is listed twice the the 1850 Federal Census. Town of Freedom, Cattaraugus county, New York has Catharine Plucker, 58, born New York; Peter, 24, farmer, farm valued at $50, born New York; Joseph, 22, born New York, and Sally A., 17, born New York.



Peter is also listed in the town of China, Wyoming county, New York. Peter Plucker, 25, laborer, living in the home of Leverett Spring.

 

1855 State Census - town of Ridgeway, Orleans county, New York - Peter Philip Plucker, 28, laborer, born in Cataragus county, farmer, owner of land.



Peter married Laura Jane Davis, daughter of Charles H. Davis and Olive Miner in 1856/57. [Peter's death states he was 33 when first married.]

Daughter Lena is born in 1857/58 in Wyoming county, New York.

Daughter Lillian is born 23 Jun 1860 in Cattaraugus county.


1860 Federal Census - Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, New York, taken the 24th of July. Family consists of Peter, 34, Laura, 24, Laura [Lena], 2, and Lillian one month.



In Jun 1863 Peter registered for the Civil War draft. He gives his residence as Portville, name Peter P. Plucker, age 38, occupation laborer, born in New York.



Mother Catharine died 13 Sep 1863 in Freedom, Cattaraugus county. She is buried in Sandusky cemetery in Freedom.


Daughter Clara/Clarinda is born Apr 1864 in Cattaraugus county.

1865 State Census - Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, New York. The family lives in a house of board construction, valued as $20. Peter, 41, born Cattaraugus county, has three children, married once, currently married, laborer, voter. Laura, wife, 32, born Tioga county, has three children, married once, currently married. Lanah, daughter, 7, born Wyoming county; Lillian, daughter, 5, born Cattaraugus county, Clarinda, daughter, 1 year 2 months, born Cattaraugus county.



Son Sanford is born 17 Jan 1866 in New York or Michigan.

The 1870 Federal Census finds the family has moved to Mayfield township, Grand Traverse County, Michigan. Peter, 45, has real estate valued at $1,600 and personal estate valued at $100. He is a farmer, born in New York. Wife Laura is 35, born New York. Children, all born in New York, are Lanah, 13; Lilly, 10; Clara, 6; and Sanford, 4.



The 1870 farm schedule shows Peter Plucker, line 37, owns 3 improved acres, 157 wooded acres, $1,600 value of farm, produced 10 bushels of Indian corn.




On 31 Aug 1872 (received for record 3 Sep 1872) Peter and Laura sold 80 acres to W.W. Bartlet for $450. The land was the North 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of section 20, township 25 north, range 11 west - Mayfield township, Grand Traverse county.


Also on 31 Aug 1872 (received for record 18 Jun 1875) Peter to wife Laura 80 acres the South 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of section 20, township 25 north, range 11 west - Mayfield township, Grand Traverse county.



On 10 Apr 1873 Peter Plucker received homestead certificate 1017, application 1508 for the SW 1/4 of Section 20, Mayfield township, 160 acres.




Daughter Lillian married Albert W. Smith on 25 Jan 1880 in Mayfield township, Grand Traverse county. He is 19, born Ohio. She is 19, b. New York. Marriages liber 2 page 47.

Peter, 55, occupation farming, born New York, parents born Germany, can not read or write; Laura, wife, 45, keeping house, born New York, parents born Massachusetts; Clarra, 17, at school, born New York, parents born New York; Sanford, 14, at school, born Michigan, parents born New York.




The 1880 agricultural schedule gives a good picture of Peter's farm. Line 5, Peter Plucker, owner; 8 acres tilled, 12 acres woodland; value of farm $450, value of implements, $10, valued of livestock $120, repairs done in 1879 $2; value of farm productions $40, grassland - 2 acres mowed, 2 acres not mowed, 1 acre hay; owns 2 oxen, 2 milch cows, 1 other, 1 calf, 2 sold living, 1 died, strayed or stolen; 150 pounds of butter produced; 1 swine 5 poultry, 25 dozen eggs; 3 acres Indian Corn, 60 pounds maple sugar, 2 gallons molasses, 1 acres Potatoes (Irish), 50 cords of wood cut, $40 value of wood products.

Daughter Lena was married to Joseph Grenon on 20 Nov 1882 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse, Michigan. She is 24, born in New York. He is 26, born in Canada, a mechanic. Marriages, liber 2, page 64.



Daughter Lena died after the birth of her daughter Lena on 31 Aug 1883 in Grand Traverse county, but before Joseph Grenon remarried in April 1885 in Quebec. No death record or burial found.

Daughter Clara was married in 1883 to Peter Gilles. No record found in Grand Traverse county.



Son Sanford was married 1 Mar 1892 in Grant Towship, Grand Traverse county to Lydia Jones. He is 26, a woodsman, born in Michigan. She is 17, daughter of Samuel Jones and Mary Shufelt, born in Michigan. Marriage liber 3, page 40


Mayfield township section 20 from the 1895 Grand Traverse atlas shows son-in-law Albert Smith and Henry Douckers owning the land previously owned by Laura.


Peter died 20 Feb 1899 in Garfield township, Grand Traverse, Michigan. His age is given as 75. He was 33 when first married, had 4 children, 3 children living, born in New York, son of John. Cause of death is given as senile gangrene, which is "a form of gangrene occurring particularly in old people, and usually caused by insufficient blood supply due to degeneration of the walls of the smaller arteries."



Peter was buried in an unmarked grave in Downs Cemetery, Mayfield township, Grand Traverse, Michigan.

The 1900 Federal Census finds Laura Plucker, servant, born Jan 1835, 65, widowed, 4 children born, 3 children living, born New York, father born New Jersey, mother born Connecticut, living in the home of Hugh Clyde and his wife in Blair township, Grand Traverse county.


By the 1910 Federal Census Laura is living with her son's family in Acme township, Grand Traverse County. Sanford Pluck, 44, married once, married 18 years, born Michigan, parents born New York, farmer on general farm, own mortgaged farm. Wife Lydia Ann, 35, 2 children born, 2 children living, born Michigan, parents born Canada-English; sons Eldred, 13, born Michigan and Glenn, 7 born Michigan. Mother, Laura J., 75, widowed, 4 children born, 3 children living, born New York, father born Connecticut, mother born Rhode Island.


Daughter Clara died 22 Jul 1913 in Traverse City.


Laura died 17 Jun 1919 in Acme, Grand Traverse county. Her birth is given as 3 Jan 1835 in New York, the widow of Peter Plucker. She died of mitral insufficiency and is buried in Downs Cemetery in Mayfield township.
