John Catalano


Giovanni Battista Catalano was born 31 Jul 1869 in Termini Imerese, Palermo, Sicilia, Italy, the eighth child of Cosimo Catalano and Maria Concetta Palmisano.

John was married 16 Jan 1897 in Termini Imerese to Anna Guglielmino. She was born 20 Jul 1877 to Giuseppe Guglielmino and Caterina Cianciolo.

Son Samuel Cosimo was born 8 Jan 1900 in Milwaukee.

The 1900 Federal Census has John B., 30, married 4 years, to US in 1885, naturalized citizen, fruit dealer, rents house; with wife Anna, 23 and son Sam, 4 months, living at 246 Milwaukee Street. Also at this address is brother Mariano. Next door (244 Milwaukee) is brother Antonio, with brother Vincent living in the rear of 244 Milwaukee.


1900 Milwaukee City Directory, John is a fruit distributor, living at 246 Milwaukee Street.


The 1902 Milwaukee City Directory has John Baptiste as part of M. Catalano & Bros, living in the rear of 256 Milwakee.



Daughter Maria Concetta (later called Jennie) was born 10 Jan 1904 in Milwaukee.

Daughter Caterina (later called Catherine) was born 20 May 1905 in Milwaukee.

1905 Wisconsin State Census lists Batesta, 36, a fruit dealer, rents; Annie, 30, and children (all born in Wisconsin): Samuel, 5; Josue (Jennie), 2; Catherine, 1.


1905 Milwaukee City Directory (the last one he is listed in) lists John B., workin for Catalano, Marchi & Co., living at 244 Milwaukee Street.


Son Anthony was born c1907 in New Haven, Connecticut.

By the 1910 Federal Census the family has moved to Michigan, and is residing at 450 Rivard Street in Detroit. J.B., 40, to US in 1887, Naturalized citizen, salesman in the fruit business, rents - house. Anna, 32, gave birth to five children, four living, to US in 1896. Children are Sam, 10, born WI; Jennie, 6, born WI; Carrie, 4, born WI;, Tony, 2, born CT.


Samuel's WWI draft registration dated 12 Sep 1918 has him as a student at Detroit College, living at 272 E. Congress, 6'6" tall, blue eyes and brown hair. Nearest relative is Mrs. Anna Catalano, same address.





In the 1920 Federal Census the family is still in Detroit. J.B., 40, to US in 1890, has petitioned for citizenship, is a salesman in wholesale fruits. Anna is 43, date of arrival in the US is unknown. ; Samuel, 20, born WI; Jennie, 16, born WI; Kathleen, 14, born WI; Anthony, 12, born CT. It seems strange that John's date of arrival and citizenship status has changed and that Anna's date of arrival is unknown. Did one of the children answer the census taker's questions?


On 24 Dec 1925 in Detroit, daughter Jennie married Paul Pellerito.



The 1928 University of Detroit yearbook lists Anthony J. Catalano among the pre-med students.

1930 Federal Census has the family at 988 Congress in Detroit. John B., owns home valued at $2,500, age 61, married at 27, date to US unknown, naturalized citizen, wholesale merchant in fruits; Annie, 53, married at 19; to US in 1903; Samuel, 30, born WI; retail druggist at drug store; Anthony J., 24, born CT; Catherine, 25, born WI.

Son Sam was killed in a fight with Jennie's husband, Paul Pellerito on 26 Dec 1933 in Detroit.

Detroit Times 2 Jan 1934 - Seven year old Joseph Pellerito is called to testify about the fight between his father, his uncle and both grandfathers.

The 1940 Federal Census gives John B. as the person giving the answers. He is 70, went to 4 years of high school, born Italy in Palermo; Anna is 62, did not go to school, lived in same house in 1935; Catherine, 35, single, went to 4 years of high school, born WI, medical doctor in private practice; Anthony, 33, single, 2 years college, born CT in New Haven, medical doctor in private practice.




The 1941 Detroit city directory has Anthony J, employed at Peoples Drug Co., living at 988 E. Congress; Catherine, employed as a clerk, living at 988 E. Congress, and John B. (Anna), living at 988 E. Congress.


Anna died 27 Nov 1954 in Michigan.

John Batiste died 1959 in Michigan.

Daughter Catherine died 9 Dec 1993 in St. Clair Shores, Macomb, Michigan.

Son Anthony's died date is unknown.
